 Calling All High School Seniors
in the Richardson Independent School District!

The League of Women Voters of Richardson (LWVR) is sponsoring a contest on Instagram.  The contest is open to all high school seniors in the Richardson ISD (RISD).

Students submit an original video about "Why should I vote?" that is no longer than 60 seconds.  LWVR determines one winner from each RISD high school.  Each school's winning video will be uploaded to LWVR's Instagram account, where the number of 'Likes' will determine the overall winner.

The deadline to submit the videos is Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 6pm. The winners will be announced on Monday, April 22, at 6pm when the winning videos are uploaded to LWVR's instagram account.

Once the school winners are on Instagram, vote for the video you like best.  The video with the most 'Likes' by 6pm on Sunday, April 28, 2024, will be declared the overall winner.

Each video will be judged in the following categories:
  • Length of video
  • Addresses the topic
  • Accuracy of information
  • Nonpartisanship
  • Originality
  • Entertainment value
The winners will be invited to attend dinner at Aboca's on Thursday, May 2, 6pm.  That's the dinner before LWVR's Annual Meeting.  We will award the checks and certificates to the winners at the dinner.

For full details, go to www.lwvrichardson.org//instagramcontest.

Did you miss our public meeting?

The Richardson Interfaith Alliance and the League of Women Voters of Richardson co-sponsored a meeting on Thursday, March 28, 2024.  Dr. Lauren Santoro, Assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas, spoke on the topic:  "Fake of Fact?  Can you tell the difference?"

Due to technical difficulties, the program was not videoed.  However, you may see the slides that Dr. Santoro used in her presentation at www.lwvrichardson.org/FakeOrFact.

Voter Registration Events in March

Spring has afforded several opportunities for Voter Registration events.  March, in particular, has been a productive month for LWVR Voter Registration.  We have reached out in the community answering questions, registering voters, and providing information.

We held a registration event at The Wellington Senior Living Community. There we registered several voters and helped them with forms requesting the opportunity to vote by mail. We also heard about how passionate they were to have the opportunity to vote and about how, despite them being less mobile, they were still grateful to have the opportunity to exercise that right.

LWVR was also represented at the Dover Elementary All Stars night where we provided information to family members and registered voters as well.

We have also been invited to five different events at the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas). One of the UNT Dallas events resulted in an invitation to a Parkland Community Health event. At all events, we provided voter information as well as registration opportunities.

A March 21 United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalization event provided our League, in collaboration with the Collin County and Dallas Leagues, to offer voter registration. We were pleased to accept applications from 667 new citizens!

We have partnered With Vote Riders (www.voteriders.org) to distribute information about overcoming barriers to obtaining Identification for voting.  They have provided us with great information that we have been distributing at our registration events and at our office.

April will focus on our LWVR Instagram contest for Richardson ISD High School Seniors and on the LWV Texas Convention.  We are gearing up for summer opportunities of registering voters, If you would like to help out or would like further information please contact Janet Centola at VoterReg@lwvrichardson.org.

CHIP and Children's Medicaid
Application Help Session
April 20

The League of Women Voters of Richardson and other groups involved in advocacy for children sponsored a CHIP/Children’s application help session on February 17, 2024, at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, Richardson, TX.  Four families attended and received help and information.  On March 21 we were invited to a health and information night at Dover Elementary School.  It was a very well attended event and we distributed invitations, along with other information, to a help session on March 23.  On March 23 five families received help with applications for insurance. Marcie Salamone and I assisted Patricia Marquez and Judy Tran from the Community Council of Greater Dallas (CCGD).

Thank you for your support and encouragement for families to obtain health insurance for their children.  There is another help session scheduled for

St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church
1220 W. Belt Line Road
Richardson 75080
from 9 to noon on April 20, 2024

We invite CCGD specialists on these programs to attend who speak Spanish and can answer any questions.  If your schedule permits, please consider coming to help or to meet our attendees.

A family of four with an income of about $60,000 per year may be eligible for insurance for their children.  These programs are well established and are excellent resources in helping children become and remain healthy.  All information gathered is kept private and secure, as required by law.
