League of Women Voters of Richardson in Action:

Even though the local League of Women Voters of Richardson is best known for its Voter Service work – providing information about elections, conducting voter registration drives and candidate forums, and producing Voters Guides—the Richardson League is also active in the area of civic action.

The League of Women Voters takes action on an issue or advocates for a cause when there is an existing League position that supports the issue or speaks to the cause.

Positions result from a process of study. Any given study, whether it be National, State, or Local, is thorough in its pursuit of facts and details. As the study progresses, a continuing discussion of pros and cons of each situation occurs. Prior to the results of the study being presented to the general membership, study committee members fashion consensus questions that are then addressed by the membership.

Additional discussion, pro and con, takes place as all members learn the scope of the study. After the members reach consensus, the board forms positions based on that consensus.

Currently, issues that are priorities for our League include:

  • CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) – Assist with enrollment events
  • Home safety – work with government entities to help obtain assistance with necessary home improvements
  • Census and Redistricting – support opportunities for input into the process
  • Hike/bike trail completion – work with city to hook up the trail to the Dallas trail
  • City Charter improvements – suggest changes supported by the League

Historically, the League of Women Voters has been active in shaping policies in the Richardson region, including:
  • Unified polling places
  • Richardson's inclusion in the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Rail System
  • Better regulation of childcare facilities
  • Implementation of citywide recycling
  • Expansion of public parks
  • Televising city council meetings
  • Raising the ratio of nursing and counseling staff to students in public schools
The League of Women Voters of Richardson can also act on any position established by the state League or the National League.
