Registering to Vote

WHO CAN REGISTER?

According to the Texas Secretary of State's website, you are eligible to register to vote if:

  • You are a United States citizen;

  • You are a resident of the county where you submit the application;

  • You are at least 17 years and 10 months old, and you are 18 years of age on Election Day;

  • You are not a convicted felon (you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole); and

  • You have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

AM I ALREADY REGISTERED?

You can find out if you are already registered to vote on the Texas Secretary of State’s website, or by checking your county's online database.

Dallas County

  • Go to the Dallas County Elections Department's website, and under the "Voters" menu, click on "Registration" and then on the next page, click on "Check My Registration".  Fill in the fields on the form and it will tell you if you have an active registration.  Note: On that form, your status must be “Active.” Otherwise, you will need to re-register.

  • If you are already registered, you will see a page with your precinct number and list of all the districts (for example, Congressional district, County Commissioner's district, etc.) in which you will vote.

Collin County

  • Go to the Collin County Elections Department's website and fill out the online form to find out if you are registered.

  • If you are already registered, you will see a page with your precinct number and list of all the districts (for example, Congressional district, County Commissioner's district, etc.) in which you will vote.

HOW DO I REGISTER

Options for registering to vote in Texas:

  • On the Texas Secretary of State's website, you can either fill in, print out, and mail a registration application, or you can request that an application be mailed to you. If you fill out and print an online voter registration application, you will then mail it to your county Elections Department:

                    Collin County Elections Department
                    2010 Redbud Blvd.
                    Suite 102
                    McKinney, TX 75069

                    Dallas County Elections Department
                    1520 Round Table Drive
                    Dallas, TX 75247

  • Call your county Elections Office (Dallas or Collin) and ask them to mail you a voter registration application.

  • If you do not have a printer, you can fill out an application online at Register2Vote.org. They will then mail you your completed application form and a stamped, addressed envelope. Sign the form and mail it in. There is no cost to the applicant. Once you've received your ballot, fill it out and return it to your county Early Voting Clerk in time to arrive on or before Election Day.

  • You can also pick up a voter registration application at the Richardson Library.

  • Or you can call the League of Women Voters of Richardson office at (972) 470-0584 and we will mail you an application. We also have Volunteer Deputy Registrars who are certified by each county to help voters register to vote.

  • NEW!  If you are renewing or updating a Texas driver license online, you may now register to vote online as part of that process.

  • NEW!  If you are already registered to vote in Texas and need to change your address or name, you may do so online.
