Over 5,000 New Voters Registered at USCIS Ceremonies

LWVR member Cathy Murphree speaks to new U.S. citizens.  They have just taken the oath of allegiance at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Field Office in Irving, TX, to become United States citizens.  Cathy leads the joint effort between LWVRichardson, LWVDallas, and LWV Collin County to register new citizens in north Texas to vote.  So far in 2025, the team (which includes other nonpartisan groups) has registered 5,039 new citzens to vote in Texas.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

CHIP and Children’s Medicaid have been well received by Texas families and these programs help to assure that our children have adequate preventative care in addition to coverage for more complex medical care. It is much more cost effective to provide immunizations, check-ups, and early intervention in childhood illnesses than to wait for a problem to develop into an emergency.

Our next opportunity to help will be during the Health Fair on August 16, 2025, from 9 am to noon at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church. As usual, Texas leads the nation in the number of uninsured children.

Families who do not have coverage through their employment such as seasonal workers, employees who work part-time, grandparents who are raising their grandchildren on a fixed income, those who are currently unemployed, and teenagers who are “on their own” are some who might have eligible children. Please invite anyone you think may benefit to be with us on August 16.

Thank you for your support and help. Federal funding for health care and for the non-profits that assist families that are challenged to afford health care has decreased recently. Anything we can do is even more important than ever.

To the League of Women Voters Leadership:

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Mustafa Abdul Haque, and I’m a researcher at Southern Methodist University conducting a study titled “Applying Value Theories to Understand Civil Engineering Infrastructure Preferences.”

This project aims to better understand how community values influence public preferences around infrastructure, such as roads, water systems, transit, and public spaces, across North Central Texas. Our goal is to inform more equitable, inclusive, and community-driven infrastructure planning by mapping how different demographics and localities prioritize various infrastructure elements.

Your organization has long championed civic engagement and equitable representation in decision-making. This research directly aligns with the League’s mission to empower voters and defend democracy by ensuring that public works reflect the actual needs and values of the people they serve. We believe this study could help amplify the voices of underrepresented communities and offer data that local leaders, including the League, can use to advocate more effectively for just and responsive policy.

We’re asking for your help distributing our short, anonymous survey to your members and partners. Participation takes only 10–15 minutes, and respondents can opt into a raffle for a $125 Amazon or Visa gift card. We will gladly provide a short blurb, flyer, or social media-ready content upon request.

Here’s how you can help:
Share the survey link with your members via email, newsletters, or social media
Mention the study at upcoming meetings or events
Optionally, connect us with neighborhood contacts or other civically-minded partners in your network

Deadline to Participate: Aug. 2025

Your support would directly contribute to a more inclusive understanding of community needs—helping ensure that future infrastructure investments reflect the voices and values of the people most affected.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or suggestions. Thank you for considering this opportunity to help shape a more informed and just infrastructure landscape for North Central Texas

Thanks,
Mustafa
