Thousands of New U.S. Citizens registered!

One of the most rewarding voter registration opportunities is registering our newest United States citizens following oath ceremonies at which they officially attain their citizenship. In the summer of 2022, the Richardson League joined the Collin County and Dallas Leagues to register voters after monthly U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalization events at the Plano Event Center. Our three-League coalition along with partner organizations and many non-League volunteers registered over 22,000 new citizens in 2022-2024, while also providing them with voting information and a vote411.org pen, made possible by LWV Education Fund grants obtained by the three Leagues.

At a March 19, 2025 event, we learned that USCIS would no longer be conducting monthly events in Plano but rather naturalizing new citizens over multiple days each month at the USCIS field office in Irving. Thanks to the multi-year relationships with USCIS officers, we were assured that our ability to register new citizens would continue, and we quickly began planning for this new format and location.

The added challenges of multiple day, typically twice weekly, events which are most often held outdoors due to limited space have been offset by participation by the Tarrant County and Irving Leagues due to this new location. In addition, the LWVUS grant fund administrators gave us the green light to adjust grant funding to restructure the program.

To a person, volunteers in this program cite how rewarding and inspiring it is to be a part of our newest citizens’ special day and helping them take the first step to become voters. We always welcome and need more volunteers! Please email
for information on how you can join us.

A Great Friday Evening Opportunity
to Engage With Potential Voters

In preparation for the May 3rd Election, LWVR Voter Registration volunteers manned a table at the Boho Market at Cityline in April.  With the backdrop of great weather and good music, we spoke to potential voters, provided Voters Guides and information about voting, and gave information about times and locations.  We even had registrations for both Collin and Dallas Counties for future elections.
This outreach location has been a good, relaxed atmosphere to welcome new residents. It is amazing how this venue draws so many folks moving from out of state!  It has helped us to be visible in the community and to engage in dialogue with folks from the surrounding areas and provide them with non-partisan information. And of course we promoted the VOTE411 and LWV websites.

Thank you to all the LWVR volunteers who gave up their time to make this effort a success.  Maybe YOU can join us next time!

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
and
Medicaid for Children

St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church hosted an application help session on April 12, 2025. The Community Council of Greater Dallas (CCGD) sent 2 of their specialists to help us. Three families completed the application forms.

On August 16, 2025, from 9 am to noon St. Barnabas will host a health fair. CCGD specialists Patricia Marquez and Judy Tran will assist families to apply for health benefits for their children. Women may also apply for prenatal coverage.

Thank all of you for your support and dedication to helping our families obtain insurance for their children. I encourage anyone who is interested to volunteer for a help session and/or mention the insurances to those who might find it of benefit.

Texas continues to lead the USA in the number of uninsured children.

Thank you for your continued support for these programs.

Obituary: Mary Louise Hauser Hoffman

Upon arriving in Richardson, Mary Lou joined the League of Women Voters of Richardson, where she made lifelong friends. Her League friends named themselves The Lunch Bunch and continue to meet monthly for lunch.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 1:00 pm at First Unitarian Church of Dallas, with a reception to follow in Channing Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Mary Lou’s name to the ACLU or to First Unitarian Church of Dallas.
