FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Ellen Steger, President                                                        president@lwvrichardson.org

During the month of November, your Richardson League of Women Voters has some fun and interesting activities for you to join.

First:  if you didn't vote early, Tuesday, November 2nd is your last chance.  That's Election Day.  If you live in the City of Richardson, there are 13 items on your ballot.  Those include the 8 Constitutional Amendments that all registered voters in Texas will have on their ballot.  No matter how many items will be on your ballot:  VOTE!

We are hoping that all our LWV-Richardson members and supporters will join us for a social on Tuesday, November 2nd, 6pm-7:30pm at Urban Eatz.  Bring a friend!  Bring the family!

Then join us via Zoom on Thursday, November 11, at 7pm for our newly-formed Discussion Group.  The first 2 get-togethers featured engaging discussions of timely, interesting subjects.

Please see below for details on all these exciting activities!

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE
By Nita Thomason, Membership VP                                 membership@lwvrichardson.org

Tuesday, November 2 is not only Election Day, it’s also the date for our next League Social. We have been trying to gather in safe locations in regards to COVID and so far we have had two socials. The first evening social was better attended than the noontime event.

So, this month we hope you will join us for another time to eat and visit. We have had great conversations and are meeting our intended goal of getting better acquainted with each other. Urban Eatz has both indoor and outdoor seating and is typically not crowded in the evenings.
Tuesday, November 2
6:00p.m. - 7:30pm
at Urban Eatz
1811 N. Greenville Ave (Shops at Eastside)
southeast corner of Central and Campbell Road
Bring a friend!  Bring the family!

If you haven't voted yet, do that first.  Polls close at 7pm.  Then, come and join us for dinner.

As of October 25 (after 8 days of early voting), 12,568 voters had cast ballots in Dallas County.  With 849 people voting at Richardson's Civic Center, it was the 2nd busiest polling location in Dallas County, behind Lakeside Activity Center.

VOTER REGISTRATION
By Pamela Wren, Voter Registration Director                          voterreg@lwvrichardson.org
Your League of Women Voters held several Voter Registration drives in October.
  • At Huffhines Art Trails, we registered 15 people from Dallas County and 2 people from Collin County.
  • At Hockaday School, we registered 10 students and 1 staff member, all Dallas County.
  • At the City of Richardson Main Street Celebration, we registered 2 people in Dallas County.
They registered too late to be able to vote in this November 2nd election, but they are all set for next year!

Pamela Wren, LWV-Richardson's Voter Registration Director, will lead the discussion, based on the June 2017 D Magazine article When Dallas Was the Most Racist City in America.

Jim Schutze's reissued 1987 book and the following two articles are related to the topic, but are not required for our discussion.
Please join us on the 11th of November to discuss this issue and help choose the next topic. So far, we have talked about

SOCIAL MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS
By Keith Burgess, Communications VP                      communications@lwvrichardson.org

As many of you know, the League of Women Voters of Richardson has been posting on a public Facebook group for the last few years.  Many of you have joined this group, and thus have had our posts show up in your Facebook news feeds.

Beginning on November 3rd, we will stop posting in the public Facebook group, and will instead be posting information on our business Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/LWVRichardsonTX.  We believe this change will give us more visibility in the community.

If you want to see our Facebook posts in your news feed, you will need to go to the business Facebook page, click on the box with three dots (to the right of the “Like” button), and then click “Follow.”  We hope all of you will follow our page, invite your friends to do the same, and will like and share our Facebook posts in the future.
